A Templar Adventure - Doing The Fan Dance Race!
News
On Saturday 4th July 2026, the Provincial Prior, accompanied by members of his Bodyguard, will be taking on a 24km endurance challenge across the Brecon Beacons, known as the S.A.S. Fan Dance.
The Fan Dance event is organised by former SAS & SBS soldiers and is a 24km soldiering time trial.
This particular test is one of the speed marches that takes place bi-annually on the SAS & SBS Selection every summer and winter.
It follows in the footsteps of a history of young men in search of something out of the ordinary for nearly 70 years of SAS Selection.
The route will be true to the original Fan Dance that has been an essential test since the early 1950’s Selection.
The essential elements remain unchanged; the Fan Dance is a demanding individual test, pitted against the clock over arduous mountain terrain.
We are raising funds for the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group and the QR code will take you to the Just Giving Page.
Thank you in advance for your support. The Fan Dance endurance challenge is being undertaken by a team of Brother Knights and 2 friends from the Worcestershire Province
More about the S.A.S. Fan Dance.
The Brecon Beacons Fan Dance is one of the UK’s most iconic endurance challenges — long on sheer determination with remarkable views of the landscape if the weather is kind (which it often isn’t). Held in the wild heart of the Brecon Beacons, this brutal exercise strips fitness back to its raw essentials: legs, lungs, navigation, and mental toughness.
Covering approximately 24 kilometres (15 miles), the Fan Dance usually takes participants from the Storey Arms over the twin summits of Pen y Fan and Corn Du, before returning the same way. With around 1,000 metres of ascent, it’s not the distance that breaks people — it’s the relentless climbing, exposure to fast-changing mountain weather, and the demand to maintain pace while carrying weight.
The Fan Dance is famously associated with British military selection, but today it attracts civilians, athletes, and endurance enthusiasts eager to measure themselves against the same uncompromising terrain. There’s no cheering crowd on the ridgelines, no medals handed out at the summit — just wind, cloud, and the quiet question of whether you can keep moving forward.
That’s why the Fan Dance matters. It’s a challenge where fitness meets resolve, where preparation is everything, and where finishing is a genuine achievement. To complete it is to earn a deep respect for the mountains — and for your own limits.

Championing Sight: The Knights Templar’s Enduring Support for St John Eye Hospital
A Legacy of Compassion and Vision
For over a century, the Knights Templar of England have stood as dedicated supporters of the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group (SJEHG)—the only charitable provider of expert eye care in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. Their partnership is not merely one of historical formality but of active, life-changing commitment that continues to grow in depth and reach.
Raising Awareness, Not Just Funds
The London Support team, established within the Province of London, plays a unique role in this partnership. Unlike a typical fundraising body, its mission is to promote, educate, and disseminate accurate, current information about SJEHG to members across the Knights Templar and beyond. Their efforts equip individuals, Preceptories, and Provinces with the knowledge and resources to connect with and support the hospital’s vital work.
From organizing pilgrimages to providing educational materials and facilitating outreach, London Support serves as the bridge between the charity’s front-line efforts and the Knights who wish to contribute meaningfully.
Transformative Impact Across the Provinces
Through close collaboration with SJEHG staff in both the UK and Jerusalem, the Knights Templar have enabled tangible improvements in patient care. Their support has resulted in:
- Sponsorship of Gaza-based medical staff.
- Funding for essential medical equipment like phaco-emulsifiers and water filtration systems.
- Infrastructure improvements, including fire safety upgrades and patient welfare facilities.
- Support for new outreach clinics in underserved regions.
These achievements are a direct result of the London Support team’s strategy to maintain ongoing communication with SJEHG, provide logistical and material support, and promote hands-on awareness across the Knights Templar network.
A Central Hub for Education and Engagement
At the heart of this initiative is a rich repository of resources—over 100 documents and videos—including surgical data, case studies, and educational booklets. All are designed to empower Knights to become informed advocates of the Hospital’s mission. These materials are available through the London Supporter Network, ensuring that knowledge is accessible, consistent, and up to date.
Looking Ahead: A Shared Mission
The partnership between the Knights Templar and SJEHG reflects a shared vision: a world where no one suffers needlessly from preventable blindness. As Dr. Ahmad Ma’ali, CEO of the Eye Hospital Group, aptly stated, “Your support truly does change lives.”
Through London Support’s tireless work and the generosity of Knights across the UK, sight is being restored, futures are being rebuilt, and hope is being kept alive in one of the world’s most challenging regions.

Knights Templar Hold Annual Service at Throckmorton Chapelry
Members of the Worcestershire Knights Templar gathered for the Centenary Church Service at the Throckmorton Chapelry on Sunday 29th June 2025 for their annual church service. The event was very well attended and brought together Knights and their partners from across the county to reflect, reconnect, and uphold the long-standing traditions of the Order.
The chapelry, set in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside, provided a fitting setting for the formal proceedings. In a moving display of chivalric tradition, the bodyguard formed an ‘Arch of Steel’ at the chapel entrance—raising their swords aloft in perfect synchrony. Led by the Provincial Prior, R.E.Kt. M J Hadden and the Provincial Sub Prior E.Kt. B J Griffin, guests passed beneath the archway as they entered, walking through blades that shimmered in the summer sunlight. The gesture, both symbolic and visually powerful, served as a tribute to the enduring heritage of the Order.
At the entrance to the chapel, the bodyguard formed an Arch of Steel by raising their swords overhead, allowing guests to walk beneath as they entered. The display marked the start of the service and honoured the ceremonial customs of the Order.
The Service
The very excellent service was conducted by Rev. Cannon Sarah Dangerfield, Parish Priest of Bishampton & Throckmorton and included readings, prayers, and hymns, with Knights and their partners seated together. It was a moment for reflection, unity, and a reaffirmation of shared values. Songs sung included the Hymn of the Knights of Malta, Paise my Soul the King of Heaven, Christ is our Cornerstone, Let the World in Every Corner Sing and Father, Hear the Prayer we Offer. Rev. Cannon Sarah Dangerfield took the congregation through the prayers – for peace across the world, The Work of the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital, for the Sick and the Suffering, The Faithful Departed, Our Orders of all Knights Templar, Ourselves in Pilgrimage and the Collect for St. Peter & St. Paul, Apostles.

A collection took place with the proceeds going to the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital. The gathering ended with a blessing, the traditional Templar Hymn and the National Anthem.
Tea and Cake in the Afternoon Sun
After the service, guests were able to walk across the fields to the village hall where they enjoyed an afternoon of tea and cake. The weather held out, with clear skies and warm sunshine adding to the relaxed atmosphere. Tables were set up outdoors, and guests were served a selection of cakes, scones, and drinks which were most excellent.
The afternoon was a chance for members to catch up, meet new faces, and spend time together in a more informal setting. Organisers were thanked for their efforts, and many remarked on how enjoyable and well-run the event was. As people began to head home, there was a shared sense of appreciation for both the tradition and community that the annual service continues to uphold.
The Provincial Prior, R.E.Kt. M J Hadden, extends his thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped to make the day possible and such a success – with particular thanks to Rev. Cannon Sarah Dangerfield for her wonderful service and insights into the difficult conditions surrounding the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital, the Provincial Bodyguard, the organist, and the ladies who organised the afternoon refreshments.

In a packed meeting. they were cheered to what, for most, was a first Grand Rank.
The Knight Templar order is open to all Christian Royal Arch Masons and rewards members with camaraderie and spectacle. The sword, worn by each knight, is most important and lends an enormous element of drama to each meeting. Using a sword is enjoyed by all.

Active Great Ranks:
A C Bolton, Deputy Great Marshal
A T Morris, Deputy Great Organist, Past Great Herald
Promotions:
I J Horne, Past Great Herald
J C Wright, Past Great Herald
First Appointments:
R J Fernyhough, Past Great Aide-de-Camp

Of all the masonic orders, Knights Templar, or KT for short, is the one which most masons say that they would the most reluctant to leave. Once a member, new recruits are encouraged to become a Knight of Malta, which adds yet another layer of enjoyment, with its unique ranks, room layout and ritual. The regalia is often thought of as costly, but Worcestershire Province keeps a large stock of pre-enjoyed regalia, for sale at more reasonable prices.
The only requirement for joining is that of being a Royal Arch Mason and there are Preceptories at all Freemasons’ Halls in Worcestershire. A quick check of the yearbook would indicate which is best for you. Becoming a Knight Templar is a step all enjoy, so why deny yourself the enjoyment?

This contribution will provide vital equipment for the Paediatric Department at the newly established Nablus Hospital. It represents the combined funding for the Eye Hospital for both 2025 and 2026, given as a single grant to support the hospital’s readiness at launch.
It was a delightful day together, culminating in an exceptional festive board in the adjacent rooms, filling two large tables at a subsequent luncheon.
Worcestershire Provincial Prior R.E.kt Michael Hadden offered his congratulations to all those honoured with Great Ranks and expressed his hope that the occasion had provided an excellent opportunity for fellow Brother Knights to reconnect with each other. He went on to thank everyone who participated in Wednesday’s Great Priory meeting.
Provincial Prior R.E.kt Michael Hadden said: ‘This yearly event is a remarkable spectacle, and I encourage you to join the group next time. Worcestershire is fortunate to have dedicated members in all the Masonic Order gatherings and Wednesday was no exception.”

R.E.Kt. Michael J. Hadden Installed into the Chair as Provincial Prior for Worcestershire
News

In a ceremony marked by solemnity, tradition, and fraternal unity, the Order of the Knights Templar in Worcestershire witnessed a change of leadership: On the 26th of October 2024 at the Kings Heath Masonic Hall Birmingham, R.E.Kt. Michael J. Hadden was installed into the chair as Provincial Prior for Worcestershire.
Presiding over this distinguished occasion was none other than the Most Eminent & Supreme Grand Master, Paul Raymond Clement G.C.T., whose presence underscored the importance of the event within the wider national Order.
The ceremony drew Knights from across the province and beyond, all gathered to bear witness to a significant transition of leadership. As Provincial Prior, R.E.Kt. Hadden now assumes a mantle of great responsibility, charged with guiding the province through the next chapter of its spiritual, ceremonial, and charitable journey.
The Provincial Prior then installed his new Provincial Sub Prior E.Kt. B.J Griffin with the assistance of E.Kt. Kelvin Gane the Deputy Great Marshal. Travelling up from Thanet Preceptory No.401.
E.Kt. Phillip Hadden was there to see his brother installed as the Provincial Prior. The proceedings were conducted with impeccable decorum. The Most Eminent & Supreme Grand Master, known for his unwavering dedication to the Order and his embodiment of chivalric virtues, performed the installation with both gravitas and grace. His words of welcome and charge to the new Provincial Prior served as a powerful reminder of the values that bind the Order together—faith, honour, and service.
R.E.Kt. Michael J. Hadden brings to the role a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of the Order’s principles, and a steady, respected presence among the Brethren. His appointment signals continuity, but also the promise of new energy and ideas for the Province of Worcestershire.
The installation was followed by a convivial festive board, where toasts were raised in honour of the new Prior. The Provincial Prior thanked the Grand Master and his Great Priory team for installing him and then presented to the Most Eminent & Supreme Grand Master a donation for £3000 for the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital for the relief of those suffering with eye health issues in the Holy Land.
The day was one of reflection, celebration, and commitment to the path ahead. As the banner of leadership passes into the capable hands of R.E.Kt. Hadden, the Province looks to the future with unity and optimism.
The Provincial Priory of Worcestershire extends our deepest thanks to the Most Eminent & Supreme Grand Master, Paul Raymond Clement O St J, G.C.T., for his presence and leadership.
